I have a client who used to run marathons, but suffered a series of injuries. Now she’s in a place where she’s not only a little out of shape, but she actually finds the idea of even walking recreationally frustrating, humiliating, and defeating because she can’t run like she used to. This is all-or-nothing thinking, and she’s noticing it coming up in other facets of her life as well.

I also see this in my weight-loss clients. They’ll have a brownie or a glass of wine, and then just decide to forego their dietary goals for the entire day. Then a day turns into a week, then a month, before their goals fall by the wayside entirely. If these stories are starting to sound a little familiar, you too might be struggling with all-or-nothing thinking.
