Do You Constantly Feel Guilty?

September 13, 2023

This is my dog. He has mastered the face of “Hey, you’re not paying attention to me, so I am going to stand by the door so that you have to take me outside.”

And you know what? It works every time because I feel guilty.

But you don’t have to have a manipulative dog, with a cute face, to make you feel guilty.

Chronic guilt can show up in many facets of our lives like work, school, friends, and family.

For many of us, there is a constant monologue running in our heads:

-I should be doing more (working, studying, volunteering, exercising).
-I shouldn’t have said that.
-I shouldn’t have done that.
-I should be able to figure this out myself.
-I should have been over this by now.
-I should have better self-control (eating, sleeping, drinking).

The list goes on.

I had a coach who would always say, “Stop SHOULD-ing all over yourself.”

“Shoulds” come from guilt, and guilt is a HABIT.

In fact, chronic guilt is actually an ADDICTION.

Guilt is exhausting, and like most addictions, it is robbing you of feeling good and being your most productive.

In today’s podcast on “The OverThinker’s Guide To Joy,” I talk about the science behind guilt being addictive.

You can listen here or wherever you get your podcasts.

If chronic guilt is something that you struggle with, you are not alone. If you are ready to break this habit, let’s chat. You can schedule a time to talk with me here or send me a private message.

Happy Wednesday!
