Finding Joy Again

January 29, 2025

For those of you who have followed my journey, you know that losing my dog, Blaze, was one of the hardest things I’ve been through in recent years.

For 12 years, he was my shadow and my best friend. And for three months after his passing, the house felt emptier than ever.

When one of my close friends, who also happens to be a psychiatrist, told me that the best remedy for my grief was to get another dog, I couldn’t help but wonder if that counted as an official prescription.

And shortly thereafter, the universe conspired to put a tiny, caramel-colored ball of fluff in my path—a mini-Goldendoodle whom I named Milo.

And let me tell you, this little guy has already stolen my heart.

He’s a reminder that grief and joy aren’t mutually exclusive.

If you’re navigating grief of any kind—whether it’s losing a pet, a loved one, a job, or a dream—know this:

There’s no right way to grieve.
There’s no perfect timeline for healing.
But when joy starts knocking at your door, it’s okay to open it.

This week on The Overthinker’s Guide to Joy, I’m sharing the full story of how Milo came into my life, my reservations about getting another dog, and why I’m so grateful I took the leap.
