I haven’t been to the Golden Globes since my last year as a television executive in 2016.
That was the year when “Mr. Robot” won Best Drama Series, and I was honored when the show’s creator, Sam Esmail, gave me a shout-out.
The Globes is a wonderful mixture of the most celebrated stars from television, movies, and music, and the setting is like a big dinner party.
Since I was a “suit” aka executive, my table was wayyyy in the back of the ballroom. I would be seated near the kitchen where the wait staff would be clanking the dishes so loudly that I almost couldn’t hear the winners’ names being announced.
But that said, every presenter and winner had to walk past my table to get to the press room. So I ended up having an opportunity to congratulate many of them as they exited the ballroom.
Recently, someone asked me if I missed my television life. I said, “Nope. Not even a little.”
It was a privilege to be a part of entertaining millions of people, but I don’t miss the lifestyle and I don’t miss the stress.
Now, I am grateful to watch the award shows from the comfort of my den in my sweatpants and fuzzy socks.
I see the women on the red carpet, in their stilettos and Spanx, and I know the truth.
After spending the entire day getting ready, starving themselves to fit into their proverbial prom dresses, and enduring impossibly high heels, I know that, after just an hour, they would almost rather cut off their own feet and just get home to change into their pajamas too.
Television was my career for three decades.
It gave me an education, purpose, and incredible friendships, but it was not for the faint of heart. The entertainment industry, like so many other industries, will take everything you give it and more.
But I am grateful for all of it because it gave me the ability to forge a second chapter of my life: Coaching.
I am a coach for Overthinkers, People-pleasers, and Perfectionists. The ones who constantly do too much, and think it’s still not good enough.
If this sounds like you or someone you know, let’s chat. Schedule time with me here, or send me a message and we’ll find a time together.
