How Do You Manage Your Feelings?

February 9, 2022

We have somewhere between 6000 and 60,000 thoughts a day.

Since our thoughts create our feelings, that’s a lot of thoughts and feelings to sift through each and every day.

Whether you are crazy busy running a home, a family, a job, a business or you are simply looking for the motivation to do be more productive, it can be a challenge to manage your OverThinking brain.

It is especially tricky if those thoughts are accompanied by negative feelings like anger, frustration, sadness, loneliness, or even boredom.

This is when most of us fall into the “buffering” trap.

Buffering is what we do to avoid our negative emotions. It can be anything from endlessly scrolling on social media, binge-watching television, excessively playing video games, gambling, or self-medicating with drugs or alcohol.

But the most common form of buffering is with FOOD.
This is called Emotional Eating or Comfort Eating.

And most likely when we are “eating for comfort,” we are choosing foods that are highly processed, carb-heavy, sugar-laden or salty fried foods.

It is no wonder 70% of ALL Americans are overweight… and half of those are suffering from obesity.

Emotional eating is just like any other form of buffering, it is simply an avoidance mechanism.  A way of managing our unpleasant thoughts and feelings.

But comfort eating leads to other problems besides weight gain. It can lead to poor health, fatigue, brain fog, and lower self-esteem.

Comfort eating or buffering with food is just a habit.
You are not alone… and you are not stuck.

There are some simple tricks to changing this behavior.

You can learn more about ways to combat emotional eating in today’s podcast episode of The OverThinker’s Guide To Joy.

This is one of a two-part series that talks about how changing your relationship with food might help you lose weight and feel healthier at the same time. You can listen to the episode by clicking here or on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube.

Happy Wednesday!
