No Matter Where You Go, There You Are

August 3, 2023

In 2009, I moved to “paradise.”

I mean who doesn’t want to live on a tropical island where the temperatures are generally between about 75-85 degrees all year round?

I was happy to trade in my tailored suits and my crippling high heels for flip-flops and tennis skirts.

Our new home had ocean views in almost every room and it all seemed so perfect.

I imagined that I would finally be able to stop and smell the plumeria and that my stress would just melt away into the nightly sunsets.

I could not have been more wrong.

There is a common misconception that moving to “paradise” or finding that perfect job or that perfect partner will make your life perfect.

But as the saying goes, “No matter where you go, there you are.”

Like most people, I thought moving to Maui would solve my lifetime patterns of overthinking, hypervigilance, Type A, list-making, and box-checking personality.

Wrong again.

Moving to Maui, and telecommuting to my television job in Hollywood, just made me feel more anxious and oddly guilty for the privilege that I was not enjoying.

This is because I had missed one key step in making such a big change.

In today’s episode of “The OverThinker’s Guide To Joy,” I talk all about

why people fall into the trap of “If Only” thinking.

It’s the thought error of thinking, “If only this one thing changes, then everything will be perfect.” If that resonates with you, then check out today’s episode! You can listen here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Happy Wednesday!
