Small Moments That Change Everything

August 21, 2024

Almost 25 years ago, I was leaving ABC to take a new job running drama development for the USA network. Everyone thought I was crazy because cable had yet to make its mark in television.

But as I was packing up my office, something told me to grab my copy of the original Monk script. We had developed this project earlier that year but were unsuccessful in finding the right actor for the lead role.

I had a gut feeling that ABC would probably not put it back in development for another round of consideration, and it might be a good fit for my blank slate at USA.

That gut instinct paid off when the network agreed to let us acquire the script a few months later, and eventually, we cast Tony Shalhoub in the iconic role of Adrian Monk.

Eight Emmys, one Golden Globe, and two Screen Actor Awards later, Monk became one of the highest-rated shows in basic cable history.

The show’s popularity continues today in syndication, and they made a movie sequel this year called Mr. Monk’s Last Case.

In today’s episode of The Overthinker’s Guide To Joy podcast, I have the pleasure of interviewing Tony Shalhoub about his career, developing a bit of obsessive-compulsive behavior, and the serendipity of small moments becoming life-changing.

You can listen to the episode here or watch it on YouTube.

Happy Listening and Happy Wednesday!
