I don’t know about you, but the holidays really bring out my inner perfectionist.
I am not even making Thanksgiving dinner this year, thanks to my brother David who will be hosting it again.
But in years past when I did host it, I would always wake up in the morning with body aches… like I was coming down with something.
I used to chalk it up to finally getting a four-day break from work and figured it was just my body letting go of the accumulated stress.
But I came to realize that those body aches were my own perfectionism showing up as exhaustion.
I put so much pressure on myself for wanting everything to look good, taste good, and have the mess all cleaned up before the guests arrived, I would work myself into a frenzy.
And in spite of my efforts to make it all perfect, something always went wrong anyway. Something was underseasoned, over-salted, burnt, cold, or not the way I wanted it to be.
And now, even with the only assignment of making mashed potatoes and homemade cranberry relish tomorrow, I find myself still feeling a little bit of that perfectionist creeping in.
Perfectionism is not a disorder, a disease, or a genetic condition. It’s just how some of us are wired.
But here’s the deal, not all perfectionists are the same, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing after all.
In today’s episode of “The OverThinker’s Guide To Joy,” I do a deep dive into the 5 types of perfectionists. If you suspect that you are a perfectionist, this episode is for you!!
You can listen here or wherever you get your podcasts.
If perfectionism is getting in your way of getting things done, coaching might be right for you! Schedule your free consultation here or send me a note and we’ll find a time together.
Happy Thanksgiving!
