What Are You Looking Forward To?

January 9, 2025

As everyone settles back into their post-holiday routines–getting the kids back to school, returning to work, or adjusting to regular life, there can be a post-holiday letdown.

Several friends and clients have told me, “Now that the holidays are over, I need something to look forward to.”

January is the middle of winter, and whether you live in a cold climate or not, it can still feel like you are supposed to hibernate or turn inward.

For many, it can feel like the “party” has come to a grinding halt.

So, how do we break free of our post-holiday-winter-blues?

Here are five easy ways to break through the malaise:

1. Plan a Micro-Adventure.
You don’t need a big vacation to give yourself something to look forward to. Schedule a small adventure for the weekend—a day trip to a nearby town, a hike in nature, or even trying a new café or restaurant. The key is breaking out of your routine and creating moments of novelty and delight.

2. Put a Fun Event on Your Calendar.
Whether hosting a game night, signing up for a cooking class, or booking tickets to a concert or show, having an event on the horizon can boost your mood and give you something exciting to anticipate.

3. Start a New Project.
Is there a hobby you’ve been curious about or a goal you’ve been putting off? Use January as the launchpad for something new. It could be as simple as starting a puzzle, organizing a photo album, or learning a new craft.

4. Schedule a Treat for Yourself.
Sometimes, the simplest things can feel luxurious. Plan a self-care day, book a massage, or treat yourself to a cozy evening at home with a favorite movie and your comfiest blanket. Small indulgences can go a long way in breaking up the monotony of winter.

5. Reach Out to Someone You Miss.
Human connection is one of the best ways to lift your spirits. Could you text a friend, plan a coffee date, or even schedule a Zoom call with someone who lives far away? Knowing you have a meaningful interaction coming up can be energizing.

The key to beating the post-holiday slump is creating small, meaningful moments to look forward to. So, what will you plan this week?

Happy Wednesday!
